DME stands for

Distance Measuring Equipment. Equipment used to measure, in nautical miles, the slant range distance of an aircraft from the DME navigational aid.

Distance Measuring Equipment is a ground-based navigation aid that determines how far the aircraft is from the station by measuring the time for a radio signal to travel to the DME site and back. The result is shown in nautical miles and represents the slant range—the straight-line distance from the aircraft to the DME antenna. Because the aircraft is elevated, this distance is longer than the ground distance to the station. DME is commonly paired with VOR (VOR/DME) or TACAN, giving both directional bearing and distance for navigation. The other phrases aren’t standard aviation terms for a distance-measuring system, so they don’t describe what DME does.

Direct Magnetic Emission.

Differential Mechanical Echo.
